Just received my annual Virginia personal property (i.e., car) tax bill:

'04 Viper --
Tax amount: $3516.16
Car Tax "Relief": $639.80
Tax to be paid: $2876.36

'98 V6 Camry --
Taxes owed (after "relief"): $93.91

Talk about a graduated taxing scheme/scam. And I already paid VA state sales tax on my cars when I bought them. I also pay VA income tax, VA sales tax and VA real property tax.

Virginia is a socialist state; don't move here.

Sorry for the rant. Grrrrrr...

Dang! My '04 viper taxes here in Colorado were about $630.

Look on the bright side. Virginia public schools are way better than those here in Colorado. The money's got to come from somewhere.

I do not know about the school system thing, you know, you give kids books and send them to school and they do what??????
Every year Virginians take it in the rear for what ever the state deems taxable, The Governor won on promises to over turn the state PPT, but, NO, we get some BS tax relief. The only recourse I have is to pass it on to my customers, sound familiar? I love it in VA, but the taxes in the old commonwealth really ****..........

Over here in neighboring Md. we have no PPT on cars but we have to pay income tax not only to the state but also to the county. Same shaft – different shape.

It does seem like an incredible amount of money, I am curious what are the average real estate taxes in comparison ?

I am trying to get my brother to let me register my Viper stuff in his home town in Alabama, would be a lot cheaper than Virginia. Anyone else do that? buy in one state, register in another for lower tax liability? promise I will not tell........

My 02 GTS tax was $1900. I vowed not to buy another car over $75K until I have a second home out of state. I love the Ford GT, but imagine paying $5K a year on it?

We've been looking on and off for a weekend getaway in the West Virginia "mountains." Today's tax bill just turned the search efforts WAAAAAAY up!

Y'all should think about moving to Houston, Texas. No personal property tax, no state income tax and we can deduct our sales tax from our federal tax return! Plus, you get to drive your Viper 12 months of the year with the top down! Whoooo hooooo!

Virginia was planning to phase out the tax when the economy was good. Now that plan has been scratched. I am considering getting an ERA replica GT40. The car will be exempt from the car tax as it will be registered as a classic.

Are you kidding me you have to pay an annual tax on your car ? This is on top of your sticker ?
No kidding. In addition to paying four percent sales tax at the time of purchase, plus a reoccurring annual tax based upon the value of the vehicle, which before adjustment is 4.57%, we also pay a $25 per year decal fee. Welcome to Socialist Virginia.

When the annual car tax was first introduced in Virginia, the voters went nuts and elected a governor who promised to immediately repeal it. Once in office, however, the liar showed his true colors and merely offered a deduction in the taxes owed on the lower-end of a car’s value (and even that took years to implement). The result has been two-fold. First, each car tax bill comes with three figures: the amount of taxed assessed at 4.57% (which scares the hell out of most people), the amount the Virginia government has, in all its benevolent generosity, determined to forego (the so-called "relief," which is to make us abused tax payers feel lucky I guess), and the amount you still owe after such relief. Second, because the so-called "relief" is applied on the lower end of value, most of the voters are now sufficiently pacified, while a minority of us who work our butts off to purchase a high-end car, have to pay a grossly disproportionate percentage of the car tax. Look at two of my cars for example. My '98 Camry is valued by Virginia around $7.5K and I owe about a $100 in car tax on it. My '04 Viper on the other hand is valued at around ten times that of the Camry, but the taxes I owe on it are around THIRTY times that which I owe on the Camry, or about $3,000!

JWVIPER -- Real property tax in my county, Fairfax, is 1.13% of assessed value, but at least it applies to everyone equally. Fairfax also adds one percent to the state's 4% sales tax. And yes, we also pay income tax in Virginia.

Virginia is tax payer hell.

Again, sorry for the rant. Venting helps.

I grew up in Virginia (Fairfax County.)
I remember when they were building the Dulles Access toll road. They assured everyone that the tolls would only be in place the first couple of years, until they had recouped the cost of building the road. That was in the late 1970s. Almost 30 years later, the tolls are still there.

Never trust any politician who promises to do away with an established revenue stream. It's like a crack addict making promises to give up crack.

True, but our sales tax rate is 8.25% here in Jefferson County, and I pay over $3000/month in personal property taxes on the house. I agree TX is better than many states with no state income tax, but every state is going to get your money somehow.........

Gotta pay to play,

Ben

Don't even go there...

Viper cost for Europe :
Base price
+ 20% sales tax
+6% import tax
+16% guzzler tax.

Now that's a SOCIALISTIC reaming...

Every state gets you one way or the other, whether through property taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, or whatever. In Va, it is a load of BS though, the Gov ran for election to repeal the car tax, but once in, said they were only going to do it for the first 20k of a car's value. Then they rolled it out in stages, ~15% a year, until they got to 70% of the first 20k, and I think they stopped there because they could afford to lose the revenue. It's just another BS way to make a disproportionate tax against "wealthier" individuals though.

Um, you win, or lose, or, um... OUCH!!! You're right. Europe is more socialist than even Virginia. It's still the case, however, that Mark Warner, our Virginia governor, is reprehensibly dishonest.

But its one time fee that you will get (sort of) recouped at the resale. Does really Austria have gas guzzler? Czech (next door) does not for sure.

What Va has is really ridiculous - they want them to pay every year 4% from the vehicle value

Having lived in Arlington and Mclean I can tell you it is risky to register the vehicle in another state. If you get a parking ticket DMV's tracking system will give you 30 days to register and plate the car. A lookout will be placed and the car towed the next time around. Also if you get in an accident, there is a cross-fertization process of your driver's license address, insurance home of record, and DMV to check if you have a driver's license in a different state.

I am surprised that in Florida they do not even have a smog emissions test requirement.

What?! Someone could have 2 residences, e.g., live in VA (thus, have a VA license) but have a beach home in NC (and have a car registered in NC because it is predominantly there), and can drive their car to VA from time to time, and even get occasional parking tickets, and they wouldn't be doing anything wrong by the registration in the other state - but you're saying their car could be towed?! Without having all the facts, that'd be a load of BS!
