When did the gas cap move?

I was driving down the interstate the other day with my girlfriend when she said she saw a Red GTS just like mine going in the opposite direction. When I questioned how she knew it was a Viper she said it looked like mine and she could see the chrome gas cap. I mistakenly corrected her and said it couldn't have been a Viper because my '02 gas cap is on the passenger side which she would not have been able to see on a Viper going in the opposite direction. I've just seen some other GTS pictures and noticed the gas cap is on the driver's side on some model years. I need help on 2 things:

1) In what year did the gas cap move from the driver's side to the passenger side on the GTS?

2) Any advice on how I can tell my girlfriend she probably did see a Viper and save face?
