Opinion of K&N Open Air-Box/Cone Filters

As discussed in another post, having issues with stock air-box clips.

Wanted to get everyone's take on the K&N Open Air-Box with Cone Filters. Is it just for looks, or does it provide "real" increase in performance?

Do you have a stock engine that works OK with K&Ns in a stock airbox or do you have extra power that needs extra airflow?

It seems that testing has shown that Gen 2s Naca duct works ok at stock hp levels, but higher power levels are restricted by the small opening of the Naca duct.

As Dave stated, modifications are required to both the airbox and nose cover for higher hp applications. In front of Radiator is the only choice for more, COLD air. If the K&N is a "behind the radiator" air draw then it will lower your hp. A lot lower at high outside temps.

it does provide power increase. I think its between 10-15hp depending on other mods and airflow. But I am no expert. I have K&N on all of my vehicles and I love it. In some cases you can tell the difference as with my Ram SRT, and on others like my 08 desiel 3500 there is no noticable difference but I didn't change the exhaust on my 3500 either, where as I switched to Borla on my SRT. I have noticed a much better improvement when changing CAI and exhaust together. Like I said I am not expert and others may disagree put from my experiance it does help. FWIW

I installed an Air Raid Cold Air Intake System and then tested it on my 08 Ram 1500 Hemi. I lost .2 seconds according to my Vericom2 computer (1/4 mile times. I worked that sucker for a week and no change. The slight hp loss came with a lot of sucking noise that upset the wife (her truck) so I had to remove it.

The 08 rAM 1500 has an excellent intake system and the air filter is about twice the size of the 85s. The 08s intake also has reverbe chambers that quiet the airflow immeasureably. I gave the Air Raid CAI to my son and it made a noticable difference on his 05 RAM with 4.7L V8.

There is a few hp from the K&N filters and more hp increase from smooth tubes before the airbox.

If filters are the ones that hang behind the radiator they will lose 15+hp.

If you like loosing 15-20hp at the wheels then by all means use cone filters. Its probably due to more air flow and could be tuned out but not unless you spend the money to do so and experiment. Otherwise on a stock tune you will loose considerable power.

I really like the look and it looks functional
it doesn't draw in air from the rad. area, however, it appears you could add a vipair for some extra inlet

for some reason there are not a lot of these being used by VCA members and I'm not sure why
I have kind of had the same questions as vipuronr for a while now

I would have no problem running the box shown above, I think it seals itself against the hood. Open cone filters by themselves, I would not want to run.

Carguy is correct, the tubes are small and restrictive and the box "may" seal to the hood at the engine side, but the front profile is far from sealing to anything. Even a Vipair cannot correct that big open mount design on this box, the vipair fits tight to the edges of the stock airbox and prevents the hot underhood air from entering, this box does not and cannot do that. This box is better than just running filters in behind the rad like so many did in the past, but it is by far not the best solution out there.

Okay, to answer some of the questions:

The air-box in the picture is the correct one

My engine is stock and no engine mods in the future (at least at this point).

I currently have smooth tubes (Roe) and S&B filters

I know the cost for the K&N setup is around $400. To justify, I would need it to be better than the current stock box with smooth tubes and S&B's. If its only a few HP better, I won't bother, even with the one broken clip. Would be better for me to just replace that part of the stock box with new (depending on cost).

I love the carbon fiber air-box...awesome look. Anyone know how much that costs?

-It wont fit 01-02 wihout slightly modifying it....can be done. Call.

So, after all those posts (thanks to all), looks like sticking with the stock air-box and smooth tubes/filters is the best option. Now just have to figure out how to fix the broken mount for the clip.

You can add a Vipair to your current airbox for $60 off ebay. Nothing is changed or removed to install it.
