So I've been running the reds for over a year now, and while the car was stored over the winter, I was told to bed them in HARD, harder than I had before.
I go to a deserted highway, get the car up to 100, hammer the brakes to a stop, and repeat 5 times. When I pulled over I had smoke pouring off all four corners.:omg::D I figured I'd better get moving to cool 'em off.
The rest of that day, no more squeal. Perfect right?
Nope, next day my car's squealing like a city bus again. I guess I'll try the Hawks?
My question here is, the rotors are almost new, how much scuffing is enough? Can I use a flapper wheel? What do you guys use to get the old material off, and how important is it?

I'm looking into installing EBC reds and their dimpled/slotted rotors to replace my worn OEM pads/rotors. Along their way, I found their troubleshooting/bedding brake procedure. EBC Brakes | Troubleshooting Information | Bedding in new brakes | Brake Noise / Squeal | Brake Vibration. #2 on that page talks about using noise reduction shims. Supposedly, they can be obtained from EBC support free of charge. No idea if it works. On my daily driver, the PFC pads I use came with a some pink liquid material to coat the back of the pads to stop the squealing. It works but I never tried it on the Viper, yet. It's made by the Noise Free Co. Noise Free disc brake squeal silencer absorbs the vibrational energy that makes the brake pads squeak. Brake repair service departments use our product to silence brake noise and squeal..

Mine never squealed but I like the stock pads better. Give chuck a call. He installed mine.

They make brake noise eliminator in a spray can. Just spray it on the BACKSIDE of the pad,let it dry for about 15 minutes then install pads.

Well this *****. I bought two sets of Reds thinking that they were suppose to be good. I wonder if they are better with aftermarket rotors?

Do they '****' because of dusting/squealing/performance/function? :dunno: Dusting aside, what about EBC YellowStuff for intermediate Street/Track?

My opinion on the reds with Euroteck slotted rotors is they **** (Gen 2 with SRT calipers and 14" rotors F&R). I bedded them per the instructions that came with either them or the rotors - can't remember. It was the more comprehensive version of the 2 for sure. Anyway, they don't squeal or squeak, not too much dust, but I'm not impressed that they stop any better than my old Gen 2 brakes did. A guy at a local speed shop here was joking with me that EBC makes great motorcycle pads but...

Less dust than stock but less initial bite as well. You need to get on the brakes to get them working. The stock brembo brakes pads where better for street but dust a lot. In the end I would prefer the stockers.

Thanks Nader. The dust doesn't bother me, I'd rather have performance.

My EBC reds squealed a bit for the first 1,000 miles or so. After that, no problem. I have Euroteck rotors (slotted), so no idea if that helps with squeal on these cars. I like the less dust of the reds, so no complaints here.

I also have no complaints about the EBC Reds. I have the 2 piece slotted and drilled rotors, bedded them in as instructed, and have had no noise from them at all. The dust is very minimal also. I don't track the car so I can't say how they are in a performance mode. But I will say I have had a couple of "real world" situations on the street where I've had to get on the binders very quickly, and was very impressed with the stopping capabilities of these brakes.

Hawk pads are the fix. Ditched my EBC reds. Even after proper bedding and 500 miles, still squeeled and dusted like mad!!! Here is a similar post from the recent past:

http://forums.viperclub.org/srt10-srt10-coupe-discussions/624287-ebc-red-pads.html

THIS THREAD WAS ABOUT A RAM SRT10 !!!!

We have used, and like EBC Reds. Vast majority of folks who drive regularly, DONT have squeek. Stored pads can glaze. New pads on old rotors are a formula for squeel. There are several anti-squeel liquids, pastes and coatings, readily avail at ALL brake service shops.

And BEDDING From 100 mph x 5 ? YIKES!!! You could have had a brake fire !!!! Good thing you cooled em.... And you probably GLAZED em for more squeel!

Better to have several, in sequence aggressive threshold stops from 40 -60 -80.

The rotors are new OEM. Tried progressive braking, didn't work. I tried many recomendations, and after none of those worked I tried this one. To be honest I'd risk a fire sometimes I'm so annoyed at the squealing. I gotta dump them. My question was how much to rough up the rotor, would a flapper wheel or wire wheel do the trick? And how important is it to get the remnants of these junk pads off?

I guess I wasn't one of the vast majority Jon. Bought the "reds" from you in Mayish 2008 so they were not sitting around. My rotors had 4 delivery miles on them and properly bed them as well per our discussion. I was very patient and they never got any better. Prior to the reds, I had several sets of the "old" compound green pads which I was very happy with.

There was something floating around at that time regarding a "bad batch" of pads but EBC denied that possibility when you checked with them. I believe ViperSpecialty (vendor/site sponsor) also had claimed there must have been a bad batch out there based on his experience. :dunno:

The "bad batch" claim definitely made sense based on my experience but I will not try them again. If I could have got an "warranty" exchange for another set, I would have tried that, but that wasn't an option. Spent $200.00 and their sitting on the shelf.

Hawks work and perform as advertised. You should start selling those...bought 3 sets in the past couple of years. All have worked flawlessly. :2tu:

I can certainly concur that EBC, whether they admit it or not, have had some problems in formulation over the last year or two. Of all the pad sets we have sold, we NEVER had issues with Red until Summer 2008, where they squeeled like a stuck pig at about a 50% rate. My Jeep SRT-8 was SO bad I literally couldnt wait to get them off. We had a Viper installation that was almost as bad, and again, he couldnt wait to get rid of them. I have also just installed Reds & Euroteck Rotors on my personal car, but it is too early to comment. At about 250 miles, they do squeal sometimes, but not nearly bad enough to make me consider removing them, and it does appear to be quieting down as normal. I havent re-ordered any EBC's since, and I am about due for a replenish, but hopefully they have corrected it over the winter, as I have purposely been holding off.

Same story here. I put reds on my car with less than 500 miles on the rotors and did my best to bed them as recommended above. The dust was reduced significantly but the squeel was just too much for me to handle. Sure wish they behaved like the old green pads from years ago. Threw them in the trash.

I have the EBC reds too and I don't like them AT ALL. Too much squeel and too much dust. I will NEVER buy them again.:eater:

If anyone has purchased EBC Red from PartsRack, and encounters squeek or squeel, we will be happy to provide anti-squeel shims for no charge, to your door. We stand behind the FACT that this is not a 'batch problem' or a common problem.

That fact means little to those who have the annoyance....

The problem is indeed so rare for us, we know this wont be a big deal and we wil eat the cost.

if you had not bedded the pads from mile 1- like say drove on them for 200 miles or so,then they started sqeeking, they are done, will never get them to stop-you have to bed them right away, another note, upon brakeing you may need to do this 6 0r 7 times due to the size of the pad, when you brake, get it up to 80 or 90,brake till almost a stop, keep doing this till you get a good brake fade, dont hold your foot at a stop light on the rotors, thats how they warp, they dont warp from getting hot-so dont worry about tearing them up..

Why would anyone buy EBC reds? It has always been an intermediate pad that instead of making acceptable compromises it performs horribly in all categories. I've fried every color they have and only recommend the greens and those only for very minor spirited street driving. I have heard about EBC changing formulas but it always ends up being the same ol' story.

Go big or stay home. Either pussyfoot around town on EBC greens like I do or go with a pad like PFC01 that will activate the air bags.

I got one of your good sets then, as I have zero squeal and just a little dust. But *** you gotta do to make them activate the air bags like Chuck says the PFCs do? My big bad ACR equivalent brakes seem no better than my old Gen 2 stock brakes, and it has to be just the stopping power of those reds.

I had EBC reds and could not get rid of squeak. Hawk Performance Ceramic pads and new rotors and I've been squeak-free since last summer.
