Air box clip won\'t stay clamped

I have a clip that when closed up just slips off the air box, any ideas if it is the clip or something worn on the air box?

Thanks

Re: Air box clip won\'t stay clamped

The clip snaps into the plastic tab on the airbox. Remove it altogether and check to see if a tab is broken. If it is broken you are screwed because the airbox is really expensive. It might not be though, you just might have K/N filters and it doesn't compress as much as OEM therefore putting more strain on the clips.

Place the clip on the garage floor and give it a good wack with a hammer, slightly elongating it, but not totally flattening it. This will add just enough length to keep it closed.

P.S. Buy replacement clamps at a Chevy dealer, Tahoe part for about $2 each.

those clamps are a pin in the as*. I had the airbox break where the clamp clips into the airbox. Let me guess, the dirver's side, right under the radiator hose?

like others have said, make sure its the clip and not the box. if the box is broken, look into and aftermarket box for a fraction of the factory price of oem which will yield better looks as well as performance gains.

Re: Air box clip won\'t stay clamped

chances are there is nothing wrong with your airbox. get rid of your K&N filters, they don't fit the car, their rubber lip is too think. either get stock filters or fram filters (what I'm now using) and you'll never have the problem again. I replaced my lost clip with clips from the chevy part number available in the "illustrated upgrades" section. since dumping my K&N's I've lost a total of zero clips.

I thought it was isolated to just one clip but after removing the airbox and shuffling the K&N filters another one did it. its just poor quality on K&N's part...

and order more than one if you plan on keeping the K&N's, I lost 4 until I realized it was the filters causing the problems.

Interesting to know it's the filters? although I lost one with the stock filters. If it is the filter It may be able to be ground or filed down.

Thanks for all who offered help.

Re: Air box clip won\'t stay clamped

The K/N filter is the same thickness as OEM but is made of a different material and doesn't compress like the OEM, therefore it puts more strain on the clamps to hold it shut. Trying to cut it sounds like a mess. A previous post had someone grind down the airbox for more clearance and I can't imagine that is a good solution.

Just hit the clamps with a hammer making them a little longer and they will be fine. I've also heard the Roe filters which are just like K/N compress like OEM and don't cause the problem.

K&N blows!
This problem is as old as the first Viper built. More of an issue with the Gen 1 cars though. I have had several conversations with K&N and they claim they don't have a problem. Horse [******]!
Get S&B's and your problem will be solved.
There ARE issues with K&N's fitting Gen 1's. This is nothing new. I have bought clips by the bag full for my Gen 1.
They S&B filters fit much better and are better quality then the K&N. Don't take my word for it, Hold them side by side and see for yourself!

lol! those friggin clips. I had one pop off the other day going down the road in my neighborhood. PAaachhiiiiinnnnG! I put her in reverse and backed up, so my buddy could jump out and snag it. Poor design on the airbox in my openion. Dodge should have had a more secure design.

tracy is correct 100% the S&B filters are way better than kn. I have been a firm believer and owner of these for many vipering years now. Bought from Roe racing.

Re: Air box clip won\'t stay clamped

Bending the clip has worked, as it stays in place in the short term anyway. Thanks.
