What is the best replacement battery to buy for a 2000 GTS? Also, is it hard to replace?

Thank you in advance.

I thought the dealer said the battery was OK?

I am not a big brand guy when it comes to batteries. Just get a long life battery, 72mo with something in the range of 720-800 CCAs. Reason being these are not the easiest battery to replace so you do not want to do it often.

Remove driver real wheel, pull out the lower inner wheel well and you will see it.

I like Die-Hard Gold series 75 in our Vipers (non-tracked)...good warranty, easily found, and little trouble...about $80.00.

The dealer did say it was okay and then I went to go start the car yesterday and it was dead. So I am just going to replace it.

Get the Optima redtop, then you can forget about battery issues for a long time.

Most autoparts places (Murray's, etc) carry two red tops, the red34/78 and a slightly smaller one.

The smaller one with fit in with no problem see the below pic.. the smaller one is sitting there:

If you have a MIG welder and a cutoff wheel, I would lower the tray an inch and put then larger one in (I did that on a friend's snake).

If you want to lower the battery tray the Optima is a good choice other wise a stock battery will be just fine for a few years depending on how long the car is not operated. If you move the battery tray be careful as the fuel tank is your tray neighbor.

I think I'd sell the Viper before I sold the Hockey gear.LOL  . I should invest in some tools though, maybe one of those 50 piece sets from Target :headbang: .

Per Optima's website, ( www.optimabatteries.com ) they do not make a replacement battery for a 1997-2000 Viper. I know summit racing equipment was blowing an Optima out last Spring that was a direct fit ( under $100 ). Maybe they are discontinued, and that's why they were on sale.

Whats the difference between the yellow and red top besides being "deep cycle?"

Wonder why Optima doesnt have the smaller red-top as a direct replacement? I know at least ten people who put that one in, plug and play, easy replacement. Even though it is the smaller of the two, it still has more CAs and CCAs than the stock battery.

I agree with you, Andrew. I quizzed the Optima rep at the PRI (Performance Racing Industries) Show here in Indy in early Dec. 2003 about a rumored side-terminal-only red top Optima (that would FIT a Viper)and he assured me that it would be on the market in 90 days (by Apr 2004)...YEAH, RIGHT !!!

Last year Optima did list a replacement size for the Viper, but they have removed it from the catalog. I think in "some' cars it would fit, (and because the cars are hand made/built) and some cars it was a smidge to tall.
