a guy at willow springs (lee sheirts) had one go through his helmet, at 160, he suffered broken bones from the ensuing crash, broken nose, black eyes etc. from the bird, sounds funny but isnt i guess

You're right it can be very unfunny. As military pilots bird strikes were a very big concern especially at speed on low level routes. When I was just entering pilot training we had an Instructor killed...beheaded actually when he hit a crane at about 200 knots...totally destroyed the right front canopy... pre-solo student in the left seat was told to eject, but he wouldn't leave his IP...kid brought the jet back safely. Have to admit I never thought about Viper bird strikes though.

Run the video in slow motion you can see the brid about 100 feet before impact
