harmonic balancer / crank problem

Chris from ART diagnosed a squeaking belt as a crank separating from the harmonic balancer. The bolt was barely holding the pulley to the crank and after tightening there is still significant fore and aft movement of the pulley.

He thinks I need a new crank which means major surgery. Before I go through this does anyone have any last resort things to try or suggestions?

Not sure what he is looking at but the balancer is softer then the crank and if it has come loose the play may be all in the balancer? I am back after the 19th if you'd like to give me a call, we can talk about it. Also do a search here about the balancer!
