2002 GTS not running right.

Check Engine Light came on.

Scan tool showed misfire at #9 cylinder.

Played with the wires and car ran better - erased codes.

Did some errands - Check engine light on again.

This time scan tool showed misfire at #9 and #10.

Since 9 and 10 and on the same ignition coil, is it reasonable to assume that coil is the problem?

Wires and plugs less than 10K miles - no Viper Tech within 4 houres of here.

Thankx.

Explaining Viper things to you
Played with which wires? What do the connections inside the plug wire boots look like? Both ends. Any moisture or white oxide residue? How about the connector going to the coil pack? Is it clean and dry?

Hi, George. Any recent wash jobs...or heavy rains...or engine cleaning?? Even if NO is the answer, you might want to use an air compressor to blow out the plug wells. Did you pull the involved plugs for a look see?? (I might just replace them empirically...along with all the rest). If you have a multimeter, you might want to check the resistance on the individual plug wires before messing with the coil pack. I found a fouled-out plug on #5 once during a routine plug/wire change...and the resistance on the OEM #5 plug wire. was WAY high...and, the Viper had only 8,000 miles on it at the time. I hope it's something simple...let us know!

I had a problem with the connector to the coil pack. After playing with it idle improved.

Changing plugs is really cheap and not very much work. Do that first. Got any other cars in your yard that can trade those two short plug wires with?

Thankx for the replys.

#9 is easy to reach w/o pulling the cowl. That is the one I played with. No rain or wash jobs. Car has run perfectly until very recently.

I will pull the wires and check them for resistance.

There are two ignition coils on the car - One has 6 connections and the other has 4. The one with the 4 connections has #5, 8, 9 10 on it.

That's why I was thinking that coil might be the problem.

Coil-Paks rarely go bad.....but they do go bad. I strongly suspect wires, especially since you fiddled with them, making it better then worse...!

"Wires and plugs less than 10K miles"

How old are they? If they are factory wires, there will be a Month/Year stamped on them. If five years and older, I would blame them.

Let us know what you find and if you need any help George....914-763-3136
