Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

Different setup on Gen I...from 1995 Service Manual:

Ignition Control Module (4 rows of cavities)...

Cav 6....Ignition Coil #1 Driver BK/GY

Cav 8....Ignition Coil #2 Driver DB/YL

Cav 10...Ignition Coil #5 Driver DG/GY

Cav 12...Ignition Coil #3 Driver RD/YL

Cav 26...Ignition Coil #4 Driver YL/GY

For those INTERESTED, the Gen I tachometter signal comes off of Powertrain Control Module (has 3 rows of cavities) Cavity 43 GY/LB, BUT, remember that the Raptor unit seems unable to use this signal on a Gen II...so it sounds better to stick with a coil driver location for the signal when using the Raptor.

Good luck, and please report feedback on your Gen I hookup.

Thank you for the above info. From this info, I am not clear if it makes more sense to run the green wire (Raptor) and tap into Cavity 43? Or what would be the difference, tapping into one of the coil cavities: 6,8,10,12 or 26?

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

Do NOT tap into cavity 43. If you do, it won't work. I tried this on my Gen II and it didn't work. almost ALL other shiftlights work off of that actual TACH signal, but the ignition coils are different. PPR of the ignition coils is 1 (or is it two... I forget) while PPR of the tach signal is 2.5 . In theory, the tach wire SHOULD work with the light set for a PPR of 2.5... but it didn't work. I tired it.

Good luck, but don't use the tach wire!

Thanx JD! I can confirm that tapping into Cavity 43 does not work on my 95 R/T either.

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

Is this "Powertrain Control Module" you speak of the wiring assembly on the passenger side? Sorry for the naivety, but I'm not an electrician and don't want to be tapping into the wrong "cavity 8".... Oh, and sorry but I have a '95 rt/10 and they are obviously a little different than the pictures shown for the GTS install. Thanks for any and all help!

PCM is on the driver's side on Gen II's. Not sure if it's on the passenger side for the Gen I? It would be best if you got a hold of the Gen I service manual to see which wire is the ignition coil wire. Good luck!

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

You correct, Guys...PCM IS on the passenger side...the ICM (Ingition Control Module) is on the BOTTOM and the PCM is on the TOP....the ICM has 34 pins of which pins 6,8,10,12, and 26 are ignition coil drivers. Gen I PCM (60 pins) has injector drivers and many other things, but not coil drivers...all per 1995 Service Manual.

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

Has anyone else had problems getting their shift light to work correctly? Mine only works when set on thousands i.e., 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, etc.... I was emailed by someone who said the second dial had to be set at 0. Although I've left it at 5000 (and like it there after all), I set it at 5600 and it worked once then no more. BTW, I plugged into the yellow/gray wire in C1 and a large red wire at the fuse box.

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

No problem on mine... I have it set to 5500.

Are you sure you hooked it up to the ignition coil wire? Maybe someone with the 96 manual can verify?

Let me know if that doesn't work, and I'll put you in contact with the supplier. I'm sure if he can't point you in the right direction, he can send out another unit.

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

A couple of POINTS:

1. The 2001 and 2002 Service Manuals refer to the PCM module from which the Ignition Coil Drivers arise as "C1"

BUT, the 1998 Service Manual refers to this module as "C3"

AND the 1996 GTS Service Manual calls this module "A"...

THE GOOD NEWS is that in EACH of the above cases the module that that concerns the ignition coil drivers is ALWAYS the module with the BLACK TOP, and NOT white or gray, as easily seen with Gen II PCM cover removed.

2. From the 1996 GTS Service Module, the following are listed:

Cavity A1...YL/GY...Ignition Coil No. 4 Driver

Cavity A3...RD/YL...Ignition Coil No. 3 Driver

Cavity A5...DG/GY...Ignition Coil No. 5 Driver

Cavity A7...BK/GY...Ignition Coil No. 1 Driver

Cavity A9...DB/WT...Ignition Coil No. 2 Driver

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

Thanks for the help. It's working ok now. I have a '97 manual that I use for my '96 GTS. It says that the ignition coil no. 1 driver, 3 , and 5 driver are on the PCM C3, which has the black cover. It is the module under the PCM cover that is closest to the end of the hood (furthest from the steering wheel). The wire from coil 1 driver is in no.7 slot (wire is black and gray), coil 3 driver is in the 1 slot (wire is yellow and gray), and the coil 5 driver is in the 5 slot (the wire is dark green and gray). I don't know why mine wasn't working earlier, but now it is. I soldered the connections and haven't changed anything. I set the shift light at 4500 rpm, just so I could see it come on more frequently. I'll put it back to 5500 when I go to the strip.

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

I am going to install mine this weekend also, I have a 02, which fricking instructions do I follow? When you soldered the wire did you pull connector out of housing & solder it where the coil wire is soldered to connector, or did you strip some of the wire & solder it there?

Thanks
Andy

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

Andy,

I'm guessing you should follow my instructions, since the 01 and 02 are probably most like each other. As for soldering, I would strip some of the wire downstream from the connector, and do it there. No need to risk damaging the factory connection. If you mess up, it's a lot easier to fix downstream.

Not to worry - from whom/where do I buy these on an individual basis?

I also replaced my non-working Autometer with the Raptor. It is nice to be able to change the rpm set point from the drivers seat (nitrous vs NA). One minor correction on the wiring instructions, C1 is the rear module, the coil pack connections are on C3 which is the front module.

Actually, we found out it depends on the year. 2001/2002 manual calls it C1, 98 manual calls it C3, and 96 calls it A.

As Steve-Indy mentioned above, just make sure you use the one with the black top, and not the gray or white top.

Jack-Were you able to get it to work with nitrous right away without any modifications? Another member had problems with the nitrous switch, and Raptor Performance sent him some kind of resistor that would deal with the "pulse" from the nitrous. Sorry I can't be more technical :)

Re: NEW Shiftlight Installation (Pics) - Anyone Interested in Group Buy?

I just finished my install.... after first TRYING to tap it from the "tach" wire in C1 with no success, per the manual the "tach" wire on a 96' is grey/blue... after that gave me no luck... I simply chanced it and went with the Yellow/grey coil wire that Achilles99 had luck with, and then BINGO! done and ready to roll! so on a 96' GTS I followed Achilles99's install to a T and it worked perfect. Just got back from the test drive, and this Raptor is on the money! Thanks Achilles99 for bringing this to the board.

Use these instructions on your 1996 RT... it worked for my 1996 RT when I installed the Raptor light.
