This also happened to my pump on a 97 GTS. The pump failed at the track and was giving the same intermittent condition that you described. It was very dangerous to drive. The tech checked the output pressure and found that the seals were gone. He replaced it on warranty and I have since made a stainless heat shield to keep the header heat away from the pump.
