Below is an explanation of why this rear end is a great upgrade for your 2003-2006 Model Viper.
The production Hydro-lock positraction unit used in the 2003-2006 Viper tends to be abrupt in engagement and prone to failure in high hp applications or with gear changes. On hard acceleration the car tends to want to go sideways and can be hard to recover. The Hydro-lock, initially designed for Jeep was a good choice to replace the older Gen 2 differential but still was marginal. The pinion gears and center shaft will break under high loads and the transition from locked to unlock is not gradual. In the Competition Coupes the Hydro-lock was modified by Ricardo to withstand the heat and abuse that the racing environment brought about and improve the power transfer between wheels.
In our racing Vipers and high-powered super tuned cars the hydro-lock is not the best choice. Initially we started using the Competition Coupe Ricardo unit, then transitioned into the fully gear driven Quaife positraction differential. The Quaife improved lap times dramatically but required a driving style that had to be smooth. Hitting the rumble strips or unloading a tire would cause a loss of traction. While working on our Formula D drift effort we came across the Super-Lock positraction unit, this has become our best option now available. Smooth transition of power, no loss of traction on loose surfaces and fully tunable to the application. This differential choice is the best, but at $2500-$3000 depending on the gear choice and power level it is not practical for many owners.
Enter the new 2008-2010 GKN Visco-lock differential specified by Dodge for the Gen 4 Viper model. This new positration rear end offers pressure proportional power to the wheels and a high torque capacity. This is a great option for those who cannot afford a Quaife or Super- Lock unit.
We currently have several low mileage units (less than 2000 street miles) and inspected and rebuilt units as well. All come with our 1 year 12,000 mile replacement warranty.
