On my 2003, the shifter is of course the tall shifter. I have been seeing pics of shorter shifters. Is this aftermarket or an option now from the factory?

Aftermarket and others will chime in.
MGW LTD., INC. - CNC Machined and Turned Parts. Accessories for the Corvette, Mustang, and Viper

:) Ask for George. You need a new shifter for starters.
Here are some pictures to save you time.

Shorter OEM Knob Only:

Short Throw Shifter:

Note: Hurst Shifters are designed for use with a shaftless shift ball, thus taller then OEM shaft-wise, they will be WAY too tall if combined with anything other. However, we can shorten the hurst to OEM height for you, so they will work with any standard shift knob style, including our shortened OEM knobs. Add the two together, and you end up with a shorter height, shorter throw, completely stock looking shift assembly.
