Buy a Gen 4 or Hold off for one more year?

Hello everyone,

I'm sure I am not be the only one with this dilema, but what are your thoughts about pulling the trigger on a Gen 4 Vert vs waiting to see what the new Viper will have to offer? I've been fighting this in my head for the last couple of weeks and depending on the hour or minute I have flip flopped back and forth I love the look and performance of the Gen 4 but after reading what some of the current owners who have seen the new snake I'm considering waiting. What do you all think? I just dont know any more
Also, what will happen to gen 4 prices when we finally get some info on the new snake?

If history is any guide, the first run of cars will probably run over MSRP driven by their exclusivity......you could be waiting longer than you imagine until prices stabilize....the gen IV is a great car and good time to buy one.... cars in general are depreciable assets..... I would buy one (Gen 4) and enjoy;

Big difference in price between a Gen IV with a few miles on it and a new Gen V. And you will have to wait more than 12 months for the Gen V---more like a year and a half if you get one of the first on the street, I'll bet. Prices are now going up on on the low mile Gen IV coupes and verts, as the supply diminishes. I'd say pick up a Gen IV now with some miles on it--enjoy it for a few years and sell it after the initial rush for the Gen V has passed, if you like the new one.

Mikie, is that you? Get the Gen IV now if you want it. Grab a 2010 if you can, better 5/6 gearing for high speed pulls. The 2010 ACR is the pinnacle of the Viper production.

if price is no issue then wait for the next gen however with that being said the GEN IV is going to be the last true drivers car with all the Govt. mandates being added to cars. The GEN IV's are a bargain right now and Navy Seals approve the car...lol.

I think you're comparing apples to some unknown fruit in a closed bag. Who knows what the next gen will look like or be priced? Look at the history of the Viper...first run models have little stuff (and some not so little) that is corrected in later model years.

If you love the Gen IVs, then buy one. If you want more creature comforts, and waiting a couple years will not harm your mental health, then buy a Gen V. Good luck on your decision.

I had mentioned this in another post but I was kinda in the same boat as you. I was ready to sell my GEN IV the second I got home from VOI 11. However, I calmed down a little and decided to wait till I see the final product. I'm a vert guy, from what I understand the GEN V is coming out as a coupe first. So who knows how long it could be before a vert comes out. So i'm gonna wait. The GEN IV is a great car and if you can afford to get a GEN IV and then sell it once the GEN V comes out I say do that.

For the best price by far= a new leftover 09 like the Viper Exchange still has at Tomball Dodge. To get the latest features= buy a 2010. Or wait for the Gen 5 (if you can) !!!!!

Isn't the Gen V at least 2 years away? Life's too short to wait that long if you don't already have at least one fun car.

What about a low mile Gen III to hold you over for a couple years? A good one can be had for less that $45k.

At this point you don't know if the new Viper will be basically the same, but with traction control, or a modern sports car that will blow the doors off of everything like the Gen 1 did. Worst case, it could end up slow and comfortable like a Mercedes.

My guess is that it will be slightly less exotic looking, and have traction control which can be disabled for track use, like any other sports car, and the performance numbers will be slightly better. I'm sure it'll have a good old fashioned stick for shifting. I don't think America has figured out how to make a dual clutch transmission yet.

Gen V may be better, but most likely not be quite as much fun.

The driving experience of a Gen IV is fantastic. Engine connected to the transmission, connected to the diff, connected to the rear wheels. Push down on the throttle, and it all comes alive.

You feel like the consumate driver/pilot in this car. You know it can bite, but you have the talent and experience to tame the beast, but sometimes the beast just has to be the beast.

I expect a slightly different driving experience in the next generation, so grab some of the gusto available today.

As a hint, very few people worry about depreciation when they are kickin' it along a twisty back road, with your Viper in full boil.

If you anguish about the money, more than likely, no viper will be in your future as the next generation will also depreciate.

Yup it's me! You know whatever car I end up wont be stock so I'm not worried too much about getting a 2010 vs an 09 or 08 I thought about the ACR but I really just want to chill in the car and not go crazy like I did with my previous cars

Wow the people have spoken, it's not even close as far as the poll goes First and foremost, $$ is not an issue as I will be paying cash for the car now and hopefully will not be an issue later on either lol... I only asked about the values of the gen 4 because I know myself and I know I will most likely get bored with the car after a year or two as I really wanted to go with the Ford Gt but I cant justify spending 180K for a used car I fully know and have learned that these cars are depreciating liabilities but one can still be smart about it and not lose his shirt when it's time for resale. I've been there and done that already

Before the VOI I was pretty much set on getting a Ford GT to go with my Viper. But after the seeing the new Viper, I'm holding off to see what kind of performance numbers it's going to have. I can only justify so many two seater cars when we get to that type of dollar figure.

I saw you were looking at Doubleups Gen 4, that is a very nice and clean car. I looked at it when we attended the SRT Driving Experience at Laguna Seca. It would be a great turn key car if you wanted a cruiser or a track weapon. I'd get a Gen 4 and drive the heck out of it, then sell or trade it in on the GenV if you like it.

Either way you look at it, your in a very desirable position

Get a gen IV. Dont wait for the future in 1-2 years who knows what it is gonna happen to this world? IFs, Buts, and bla, bla, bla... A lot of talking on these Gen V. A car that will need to go counless tests and meet the new requirements of safety and polution = heavier+ more expensive, so remember that. I strongly believe that this new viper will be around 3600-3650 lbs if they dont put carbon fiber $$ everywhere(including floor), so more expensive than a gen IV was and it also maybe more expensive to have it painted once it comes into production( but that I dont know for sure).

We dont know anything really.. I pulled the trigger on a 10 ACR last year and could not be happier. A 3330ish lbs car, with 600hp perfect everywhere, and you have the option to increase 100hp N.A. with the performance parts that we have available out there.

Keep in mind that when a new car comes out of the lot to a new market, it is always good to wait 1-2 years(recalls, and other issues that it may have have to be figured out by Dodge)before you buy it.

Truely, I just hope that dodge dont try to please Fiat on how this car will look and perform.

I have my eye on a Gen V as well, but as others have noted that's two years down the road and more if you want to wait for the bugs to be worked out.
I'm assuming there is going to be an ACR version as well a year or so after that.
So get a Gen IV now at bargain prices, play with it a few years and then trade it in towards an new Gen V.
That's what i did and am enjoying an ACR now, not waiting for an "unknown" years down the road.

I thought about waiting for the Gen V, but couldn't stand waiting another 1.5 to 2 years. The car might be out a little sooner, but they will probably be going for over sticker which I won't do. So........I bought a left over 2009 Aero Coupe at a HUGE discount from Viper Exchange/Tomball Dodge.......and I love it!! They still have a few '09 / '10 Verts in stock and they will make you a GREAT deal! Plus, you will save thousands and thousands over the price of a Gen V, not to mention who knows when the Vert will be available. I say get your Gen IV Vert now (either new or pre-owned) and enjoy the heck out of it!!!

I've bought a 2010 coupe and love it. I think the 2010 will be regarded as the last of it's breed like the 1967 corvette. How can you go wrong getting a hand built performance car for 100K? Nothing else touches it. Besides with the decline of the dollar a Gen5 will either be a lower performance car for the same money or it will cost 20K more than a 2010--either way will support good 2010 resale. After all they only made 457 2010's that can be registered on the street(they made 50 ACRx that don't have vin numbers) With that kind of exclusivity I think the 2010 is a no brainer--Dave
