96-97 blue/white GTS, thinking about paint some pieces on the car like the vented cowl, but dodge dealer here having problem matching up the color with my car. First they spray color on a test card, then i hold the test card up to my car to compare the color, which i can tell the test card color is lighter than the facotry paint for some reason, dealer here uses PPG paint stuff, so i'm just wondering anyone on here knows what's the right paint code and what brand paint should they use to match up perfect???? and why the color is not matching???

Color matching by eye is this day and age is BS.I have done it 20-30 yrs ago but why would anyone be doing it today. That dealers paint and body shop is clueless. You take your car to some place that mixes and supplies automotive paint. They scan your car with a scanning gun(Just like home depot does for your house paints) and you get an EXACT MATCH.No codes or anything else is needed.Have seen it done for add on spoilers or repairing one fender on an otherwise pristine car that has seen the sun etc.No problem getting a perfect match even if the original paint has aged 10-20 years. The problem sounds to me that they are just spraying the base coat which is going to appear dull.they need to add the clear.the paint code is PBE.Of course if that is the case i would move ahead and find a different source to paint. This is a 2 stage paint(Base coat,Clear coat)

Per ASC (the original painter):

"1996 Blue GTS's was painted with Akzo Nobel, in fact all Vipers since 1992 were painted with Akzo except the cars that were painted in the beginning of 1998. They were painted with PPG."

Sikkens is the retail equivalent of Akzo and is the recommended paint for repair, though others should perform acceptably.

I myself had to have a sill repainted do to corrosion and found PPG and Dupont unacceptable from a color match perspective. The paint's fault or the painter, don't know but I'd stick with Sikkens.

i just talked to chuck, and he told me his body shop uses PPG stuff, and they can match up the color PERFECT no problem, because they found out there are total of 3 shades of viper blue for our 96-97, so i guess i will call that shop and see how to make the other 2 shades, but thanks to all of you

I have been painting cars for 30 years. Most major paint manufacturers paint codes should "match" the factory color. The art to it is matching the finish, as well as,the color. Any metallic color adds an extra challenge! Temperature, humidity and the spray gun you use all affect the final look. Also, checking just the basecoat for a match will not work, as someone else mentioned in this thread. I have good luck with PPG products, also Sherwin Williams stuff. I have been painting some traffic signals lately with Viper colors and have noticed that the blue gets a little darker with each coat, as I spray it. How many coats are you using on your test panels? I would recommend at least two and would do three myself. Good Luck!

We went as far as sending my former '96 GTS' mirror to PPG for a match...still no good. We used factory packs, the computer matching thing (can't remember the name), even tried to modify the mixes to get it right. No luck.

According to my body shop it has something to do with the actual metallic flake. As I understand it, only Sikkens has the correct 3 dimensional flake and that was why we could not get a PPG match. After only two test panels we got a match with Sikkens.

I of course would believe what Chuck says, and can't say why his shop gets a match with PPG. The shop I use has been around for many years, and I find them to be the best.. at least in my area. They are a small family shop.(A funny aside. My '72 Plymouth..now a showcar...was painted twice...both times by this shop. The first time is when my Grandmother still drove it..and now as a showcar.)

To asnwer your question... I think the Sikkens will get you the match.

How my situation worked out was that my bodyman was friendly with another shop that used Sikkens. They mixed the paint for him, and then adjusted the mix for the match.
