Re: Is the patern transparent?

I watched CSPAN for hours as this and other testimony was given on the issue of dealer closings. It was very sad. There was mention of some house bill - HR 9473 (not sure if that's the right number), but I got the sense that it would restore some rights to the dealers that lost their business through no fault of their own.

Chuck is there a bill pending that would help? If so, we could write our congressmen and urge them to support it.

Hits Home. I can't imagine. The Gov't sending me a letter telling me that i can no longer work in my field of choice. I am deeply sorry, i can in no way completely understand what has happened to the dealers that have had their business stolen from them & given to others.

Then let's open up a thread to get members to write their congressmen. I'd be happy to open one up but can you tell me what the bill provides?

I don't quite understand how either GM or Chrysler can realize significant savings by closing dealerships. Is dealership adminsitration that expensive? Can someone shed some light on the economic issues?

The manufacturers are saying by having dealers that sell all their brands (in Chrysler's case, Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler) they can eliminate badge engineered vehicles. These are vehicles that are essentially the same but with different grills, interiors, badges, etc. They build these vehicles so that a single brand dealer will have something to sell to everyone. I don't really believe it or they would be selling Chrysler and Jeep pickup trucks.

Re: Is the patern transparent?

My uncle and cousin lost their dealership too. My uncle's father started the business 42 years ago and it was quite a shock when they heard the news. All my new Dodge vehicles were purchased from them, and my loyalty to Chrysler ended the day Cordes Dodge (in Lawton, OK) was no longer a dealer. Everyone in my family drives a Dodge, and has for as long as I can remember. When I was growing up we had a yellow "K car," a Dodge Monaco, 2 Omnis, 2 Diplomats, 3 full size Dodge vans, an Intrepid, a Dodge Conquest, a couple of mini vans, and a Dodge Shadow. My father just bought an 09 Ram and traded in his Grand Caravan. My brother has a Dakota and a solar yellow quad cab Ram. I have a Caravan, SRT-10 quad cab Ram, a Viper and I was going to get my wife a new Plum Crazy Challenger when they came out. We also have 3 'Cudas and a 1972 Challenger that are undergoing restoration, and we prefer Mopar parts for our vehicles. Last month I talked a co-worker into getting a new Ram, and I tried to help Chrysler as best I could. It will now be a cold day in hell before I support a company that turned its back on my family and the hundreds of other dealers, and employees, that depended on their business to support their families.

Re: Is the patern transparent?

The economics of the dealer closings are basic supply and demand. If you have fewer car sales, then each dealer is on average selling fewer cars, resulting in more competition among dealers for fewer and fewer sales. The result of this competition is car prices are slashed or there are factory and dealer incentives to entice customers to buys cars. This reduces the value of each car and also reduces the cars appeal. Unfortunately, the car companies and not the dealers are responsible, at least in part, for lost customer loyalty. I, for one, will only buy an American built car, as i think their quality is now as good as the European and Japanese and now Korean imports. However, unfortunately, most Americans disagree. Just look around and you can see most cars are imported. When i was a kid, it was rare to see an imported car. Now that is practically all you see.

Re: Is the patern transparent?

I too only buy American but I don't see how the number of dealers effects how many cars an auto company ultimately sells. In fact I would think the opposite. I would much rather do business with a small local dealer than one of those auto superstores where you are passed off from one person to another in order to get you spend more on the car/truck.

Most of the larger dealers I've dealt with are terrible. There are some notable exceptions (Buhler comes to mind as one of the good ones although they're not super large). It would seem to me the car companies benefit by having more, smaller dealers that provide excellent service.

That's the part that makes me crazy actually. They have shuttered dealers whose service ratings were stellar. That is just nuts. With the exception of reductions in cost through elimination of badge engineered vehicles (see my post above) the dealers don't cost the car companies a dime. They could just eliminate the badge engineered duplicates and leave the dealer networks in place.

In rural America, GM holds a 10% advantage over the imports. What size dealers are generally in rural America? - small ones that's what size. GM closed some dealers in rural America and as a result some of their existing customers now have to travel hundreds of miles for service. Lunacy.

Write your congressman and support HR 2743.

Re: Is the patern transparent?

I have been in the construction business for 33 years and have been through 4 recessions/slowdowns. At the end of each I have moved up the ladder since companies had gone out of business for one reason or another. Why not let the normal business cycle dictate who stays in business and who is out. If you want to stay in business, you do good work and are reputable then you should survive. It should be the survival of the fittest.

Re: Is the patern transparent?

It is simply an outrage! This country is heading down the drain under the leadership of our now not so new President. I had such hopes for him but I have lost faith. This country is becoming socialist, maybe communist. Central planning, government owned major companies, private property seizures. What gives? I think the media was so enthralled with the man that they simply did not dig deep enough into his true ideals. He really had everyone snowed.

He's not the only one... in Communist Central here (Berkeley, CA), I have staunch Obama supporters that are voicing their disappointment. Buyer's remorse... too little too late.

Look around... I think they call it socialism...
