I try to avoid the California Duster, although if used properly, they're fine. Most people can't seem to fight the urge to press it hard against the paint though. If the car is hot to the touch from sunlight during the day, you don't really have a choice for surface dust except the California Duster.

If it's dusty in the garage, or in the shade, I go over it with high quality Microfibers and detail spray. A little more time consuming, but you'll get a routine down and can have the whole car addressed in 5 mins...

Also try microfiber cloth and a bottle of armorall cleaner bottle spray. Sounds weird but detail sprays haze the paint while this stuff shines it up incredibly. My next door neighbour has a show car and suggested that as an old trick. Really works. My detail sprays have been thrown out.

I use a blow gun for light dust. (have an air compressor in the carport area)

Also use detail spray with microfiber towels.
After so many years of this, the paint has a lot of 'spiderwebbing' though.
The Junkman would be digusted with my car. -or be able to charge me a lot of money to fix it.

It only looks bad if you know what you're looking at though, most people never notice.
So, if you want the paint to be flawless, be careful with the detail spray.

Spray it with a hose. Wash, rinse repeat.

You have suggested the safest thing to do, although MOST folks won't do it. The repeat part is unnecessary but the safest way of removing ALL dust from a car is to PROPERLY (as in 2-bucket), wash it.

I use a blow gun for light dust. (have an air compressor in the carport area)

Again, an excellent suggestion! This is what I usually do using my Air Force Master Blaster, or I just leave it dusty (air compressors can have water or dirt in the bottom of the tank so I avoid them). Then you went to hell and a hand basket with the rest of your advice but at least you acknowledged the error of your ways. Kudos to you for that.

The Junkman would be digusted with my car. -or be able to charge me a lot of money to fix it.

I wouldn't charge you a dime. I would just fix ONE quarterpanel and let it torture you every time you looked at the rest of the car. :D

Here's the deal OP. There's a difference between DUST and DIRT. Dust can be removed by blowing it off the car. It can also be removed by using a California Duster, but ONLY if you use it CORRECTLY. ANY quick detailer can be used to assist in the dust removal process if used at the PROPER TIME. Dirt on the other hand MUST BE WASHED off the car. Dirt will not move when you blow it. Dirt cannot be removed with a CA Duster. Dirt cannot be removed with a quick detailer. I say CANNOT to all these things if you are trying to keep your paint perfect. Of course you are welcome to do it the wrong way, the way that a lot of people do, just be ready to see some swirled up paint in the future. It usually never happens immediately, it takes time. But when the day arrives that you notice it, it looks like crap. Don't be that guy!

Here are 4 videos for you to watch. The whole time that you are watching them, I want you to think about one thing. Think about how much common sense and logic that I am using in the advice that I am giving. I am not using any rocket science whatsoever. If you follow me, everything you hear and see me do will completely be obvious to you. As for a quick detailer to use, don't get caught up in the hyped up advertising that you see from sellers of detailing products. After all, they have a horse in the race. So find whatever quick detailer you like to use, get yourself a CA Duster (the one with the wooden handle is the one I like), and watch the following videos. You will be amazed at the amount of logic that is in them. Especially since your car sits in a driveway.

Your learning curve starts here. ;)

There is no solution to the problem of the paint behind the wheels being sandblasted by the tires being too sticky,...is there?

And don't tell me "a truck and trailer". ....or "masking tape"
:crazy2:

You could always have a clear bra installed in that area but you'll be constantly replacing it. There's no remedy for that problem but not driving the car. That is NOT an option for me!

Not all detail sprays have this issue. I know for a fact that Zaino's Z6 does not have this issue. The problem that a lot of guys have is they don't know how to use a detail spray. One, you NEVER use a detail spray in direct sunlight or on a hot car. That's asking for issues. Two, you must use a CLEAN cloth. The cloth cannot have other contaminates on it from other products. Three, you need to buff all the product off the car. Those are the three main mistakes that people make when using detail sprays. Detail sprays, like the CA Duster end up with a bad rap because the users don't know what they are doing. It's not like we men are all that keen on reading the instructions printed on the bottle. With a detail spray, a lot of people are like, "How hard can it be? Spray and wipe, right?"

Wrong. As you can see, there's a little more too it.

Good info. Let me see...not in direct sunlight...check. Not on a hot car...check. Clean cloth...check. Car has been previously polished to take out swill marks and waxed...check. Yep followed everything you said and still a haze...hmm. Armoral cleaner is worth a shot I think

Or, change the brand of detail spray that you're using. By the way, what were you using?

You might want to try a better quick detailer then...I've been using ClearKote Quik Shine for the better part of the last 4-5 years, and it is the closest thing I've found to Zaino Z6 as far as leaving the surface slick, doesn't haze, and is generally pretty cheap.

Junkman, two questions on the California Duster:

1) Are all suppliers of this duster equal? Or are there knock-offs out there to watch out for?
2) Most car shows entail a dusty car with hot paint in direct sunlight. You say "no detail spray", so is the only option a California duster?

Thanks!

I use a microfiber duster. I spray a spritz of Adam's detail spray into the air and wave the duster through it, like the flagger at the Indy 500 does with the checkered flag. Works really swell. Wow, I sound really weird.

Meguiar's Ultimate Quick Detailer

That's actually one that I have not heard good things about.

All CA Dusters are made by the same company. I haven't seen or heard of any knockoff's... yet. Get the one with the wooden handle.

No, there is another option. LEAVE THE DUST ALONE!

That's what I do. I break out my chair, shoot the crap with other Vette owners where we talk about how much we love Vipers because they taste like chicken (lol! actually, I got that one from YOU guys! lol!), and enjoy the fellowship of other car owners. Before you know it, the day is gone and it's time to go. Then I take the car home, blow it off with my Master Blaster and park that puppy in the garage. I may wash it the next morning depending on how it looks.

Here's the thing to remember. The less you touch the paint, the less chance there is for you to damage the paint. If you are going to touch it, you want to make sure that you do in a manner that will NOT leave damage behind.

This is a topic that I am interested in as well. My car is normally spotless, except when it accumulated dust from sitting.
Having recently purchased the Air Force Master Blaster, I will now blow off the dust as opposed to using detail spray and microfiber cloth.
We do not realize how lucky we are to have a professional of Junkman's caliber help us with his videos.
Much appreciated Junkman

Thank you sir. But when you think about it, nothing I do is really rocket science, it's just plain ol' common sense when you stop and think about it. No hype, magic or smoke and mirrors, just simple logic. A lot of manufacturers will have you believe that you need everything they sell to maintain your car's appearance, which is so far from the truth. Hype... don't allow it to bite cha'!

I know that you say common sense, but until you explained it in your videos even I was unaware of the damage I was doing by wiping the car down with either a dirty rag or when it had a good amount of dirt on it.
Now I can understand how you can take care of the paint.

Yep, that's why I call wiping on a dirty car, 'making sandpaper'. No one here would take some 600 grit sandpaper and start wiping it across their car but that is in fact what they are doing when they take some quick detailer and a towel to a dirty or dusty car.
