My crank pulley loosened up, caused the belt to slip and overheated it the engine. Luckily I was a two blocks away from the house and limped it home.

I tightened it up but want to make sure it's properly torqued.

EDIT: After I tightened it was ok for a moment and then the pulley stopped and the crank began spinning in the pulley. Great.

This happenned to me. The torque is like 250 or 300 lbs. I heard the mechs had to open the bell housing and have one guy wedge something into the flywheel while TWO other guys yanked on the torque wrench. I recommend you do not drive it just 'tight' as you can get it. Jim

PS-In my case, the harmonic balancer had to be replaced too.

boplaw, the torque depends on the size of the bolt...remember that many 04's and SOME 05's had the smaller bolt that took 130 lb-ft...while 03's, later 05's, and all 06's returned to the large bolt that requires 250 lb-ft.size of torque.
From an old post of mine: http://forums.viperclub.org/showthread.php?t=583150&page=2&highlight=crank+damper

"Earlier in this thread I posted:

" You decide..."the year MAY matter"...

03 Manual says "250 ft-lbs"

04 Manual says "130 ft-lbs"

05 Manual says "130 ft-lbs"
---------------------------------------

Now (thanks to Tim in Parts at Indy's Champion Dodge) here more info taken straight from the Dodge computer (with a little extra effort).

Crankshaft Damper Bolts:

2003 part number 6036207AA size 0.75x16x2.250 (inches)

2004 part number 6506340AA size M14x1.5x102.0 (metric)

2005 part number 6506340AA size M14x1.5x102.0 (metric)

2005 part number 6036207AA size 0.75x16x2.250 (inches)

2006 part number 6036207AA size 0.75x16x2.250 (inches)

LOOKS TO ME AS THOUGH THERE WAS A RUNNING CHANGE SOMETIME IN THE 2005 MODEL YEAR.

By the way, I have ordered one of each just to compare.

Hope this helps !!! "

and, in the same thread, ( written AFTER I purchased BOTH 04 and 06 bolts for measurements) I wrote:

"JUST completed the "bolt inspection" of a beautiful 2006 Coupe (blue/white)...#30 of 200...at Indy's Palmer Dodge North...Viper Tech Phil Honeycutt did the formal inspection and AFFIRMS that for 2006 the crank damper bolt has the 1.25 inch( 1 1/4" ) hex head ("big bolt"), with a small blue dot on center of this bolt which, otherwise looks like the same bolt as found on the 2003 Vipers....THANKS, Phil & Palmer !!!

While Kurt and I were at it, we visited the nice folks at Indy's Champion Dodge...and looked at the bolts on a red 2005 SRT-10 and on a 2005 Copperhead SRT-10....in BOTH cases, the crank damper bolts were the same as on the 2006 Viper...with the same blue dot....THANKS, Champion !!!

So, the REAL QUESTION is...when did the running change occur ???(most likely in 05 by MY guess).

Bottom line:
Owners of 2004's and early 2005's SHOULD have this checked out (in MY opinion) at one's dealership to be safe and sure."

Correct, 03, 05.5-06 have the large 3/4" bolt, and are torqued to 250 lb-ft. The 04-05.5 cars have the smaller 13mm bolt, at 130 lb-ft. if a 13/16 wrench fits on it, you have the 13mm. If a 1-1/4 socket fits it, you have the 3/4" bolt. The 13mm bolts are also silver, while the 3/4" bolts are black. It was a running change during 05 according to the computer, though I have yet to see a 13mm '05 myself.

Make sure you check the crank snout for damage! it is a press-fit, so if the crank has been "widdled down" by the balancer, the car will need a new crankshaft. The crank is a harder steel and the cast iron damper, so its a toss-up if this will happen or not. If not, just a new balancer will fix your problem- and key/pin the crank to not have the worry ever again.

It is an 04 and has the 13/16 bolt. I'll go ahead and install a new balancer next week.

On the bright side, the Polk DB650s in the doors sound much better than the chinese paper. So that's good. :rolaugh:
